ECTFE and other fluoropolymer materials indicated below and used in ultra-pure applications are manufactured under extremely closely controlled conditions in purposebuilt plants, using only carefully selected high-grade materials, in order that leaching of any impurities from the product to the fluid being handled is impossible. Important applications in pipe systems, tank linings and valves are to be found in the electronic and pharmaceutical industries. 3 FEP ~ 45 fluorinated ethylene propylene A copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene, it has a similar corrosion resistance to that of PTFE, with a slightly reduced maximum service temperature, but offering all thermoforming and welding properties of typical thermoplastics.

Surface veils are available in various thicknesses, dimensions and finishes, depending upon the resin system and type of application, for example. Chopped strand mat is available in a large variety of weights, widths and finishes, the weight being specified as weight per surface area, for example 300 g/m 2. Single end rovings, made from many individual filaments wound into a single strand, or direct wound rovings, a collection of parallel filaments wound together in a continuous strand, are both suitable for most filament winding properties.

Whether manufactured by filament winding, contact moulding or centrifugation, the concept requires a glass fibre content of around 70% by weight. Glass contents over 75% will tend to show premature signs of delamination, due to the poor bonding of glass and resin, whereas glass contents less than 70% will decrease physical properties and increase wall thickness and cost. This type of laminate is obtained by filament winding, or in the case of centrifugation and hand lay up, via the use of laminate sequences relying heavily on woven rovings and fabrics.
